Up is Down?

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

Right is left. The sky is green and the grass is blue. Last is first and first is last. None of these things make sense. Or at least, they don’t seem to…

Hey GEM girls! Have you ever read in Mark 9:35 where Jesus explains that the last shall be first? The whole thing started when the disciples were arguing about who would be the greatest in Jesus' kingdom. Jesus overheard them and told them that if they wanted to be first they needed to take last place and be a servant to everyone around them. Doesn’t that seem a little backwards? I'm sure the disciples thought so. I mean, first means first and last means last. How can they mean the opposite? Well, this forwards is backwards and up is down theme is in the Bible a lot.

In James 4:10 it says, “humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” Matthew 18:4 echoes this with. "...anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven." Now, wait a second. If that’s the way it works then our society is backwards. We think that if want to be more popular we need to have bigger, better, and more expensive things. We try to get people’s attention by being crazy, funny, or annoying. But the Bible says that in order to be “exalted” or “the greatest” we need to be humbled.

Christianity is the opposite of our society. That shouldn’t surprise us because Jesus’ character is the complete opposite of Satan’s. Jesus is truth, life, and light. Satan is lies, death, and darkness. When Satan says that we need to be the best and the most popular, Jesus is telling us that if we truly want to be great it needs to come from the inside, not the outside. Humility is an inner beauty that truly makes us great, maybe not in the eyes of the world, but most definitely in the eyes of God.

Jesus is the perfect example of true greatness. He “came to serve, not to be served.” (Matthew 10:45) Jesus’ beauty and perfection didn’t come from the latest trend, how many followers He had on social media, or good hair days. The thing that attracted people to Jesus was His love and His humility.

So, it doesn’t matter if you struck out in the popularity game, ask Jesus to give you His humility. Show people what it’s like to know Jesus by loving and serving them, even when they don't deserve it. Then you can truly be great by shining from the inside out. ♥️😊

Love and Prayers,
