The Philosophy of Modesty

Have you ever wondered what the hype of modesty is all about? Or have you been confused by the different opinions about modesty that other people have?

Hey GEM girls! What exactly is modesty? Meriam-Webster defines modesty as, "reservation in speech, dress, or behavior." Different cultures and different religions have their own interpretations of modesty, and some people just chuck it out the window altogether, but what is true modesty?

When most people think of modesty, they think of extreme cases like Muslim women who have to cover up everything. However, modesty isn't just about how you dress. It's how you carry yourself, how to speak to other people, and what you do or say when you're upset.

Imagine this: a young woman is dressed fashionably, but modestly, and you think that she is a very respectable young lady. However, when she talks to her friends, she is loud, laughs obnoxiously, and tries to catch the eye of every guy who walks past her. Would her modest dress be a good witness when combined with an un-Christlike behavior? I don't think so. We need to show Jesus wherever we go, in what we say and do, and in how we dress.

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Proverbs 31:30 Instead of focusing on what you should or shouldn't wear, focus on Jesus. The more you immerse yourself if His letter of love to you, the Bible, the more you will become like Him. Isn't that what you want, GEM girls? Let's grow closer to Jesus everyday!
