The Illusion of Social Media

Scroll, scroll, scroll. It's never ending, never satisfying. There's always something to check or someone to message.

Hey GEM girls! Have you ever found yourself trapped in the social media trap? While social media can allow us to connect with others and keep updated on things that are happening, there are some problems we run into...

One problem is that a lot of media out there presents a standard of beauty that no girl can reach. It makes you think that what you are is not enough. True beauty comes from the inside (see Melody's post The Best Beauty Hack).

Another problem that's seen a lot today is that social media can be a big distraction. It seems to be created to be addictive. Think about it. Have you ever told yourself you were just going to check one thing, but ended up spending three hours on that one thing?

Just to clarify, not all social media is bad. But a lot of it is confusing us by painting a picture of "perfect" beauty. (check out Melody's post Perfection) It's also distracting us from the things that matter most, like family, friends, and just real life interactions in general.

Our generation is said to be the most socially distant, socially awkward, and just generally disconnected. Why? Because we spend so much time on devices that we have forgotten how to be real life talking, walking, and interacting, human beings.

What do you girls think? Have you seen this to be true in your own lives and the lives of your friends? How do you think we can change this behavior?

I think it starts with turning off our devices. Not permanently, just for a bit so that we can reconnect with the world. Set boundaries on internet use. Spend more time in God's Word. Make intentional family time. Go out in nature and hang with your friends. Do things that don't require you or encourage you to be on your device. It can actually be really freeing to take a break every once in a while.

God created the world around us and it's magnificent! Take time to explore it 🌳💧🌻🍂

What are some things you would do if you spent a day without your device? Let us know in the comments!

Blessings!

I agree!! Phones, though they may be used for good purposes, can be a distraction!

If I spent a day without my device, I would read, hang out with friends, maybe go on a hike, go somewhere with my mom, get food, and play a LOT more cello...that would actually probably last me two days haha!
