"Thou shalt have no other gods before me." I'm sure we've all heard it, read it, and maybe even memorized it. "Oh easy," you say. "I don't worship idols!" Well, maybe there's more to God's first commandment than we realize.
Hey GEM girls! Have you ever looked under the surface of God's first commandment?
Well, first, let's look at the dictionary's definition of an idol.
"A representation or symbol of an object of worship, an object of extreme devotion."
Okay, the first one is pretty simple to understand. "A representation or symbol of an object of worship." From this definition, an idol can be a statue, or just something else we worship rather than God Himself.
But the second one, though. 'An object of extreme devotion,' or in other words, something (or someone) we really love. Okay, now let's apply that to the first commandment.
So, an idol or "other gods" can be anything we love more than God or would rather do/spend time with other than God. That can be family, pets, electronics, a famous person, or even a piece of clothing.
Wow! I've been caught in this situation lots of times. It's really hard! Sometimes, we don't want to pray or read our Bibles because there's something else we want to do more.
God gave His only Son to die for us so that we could be saved. One thing we can do is surrender the things we love the most in this world in exchange for the love of God, which never fails. Maybe there's something you've been putting over God lately. Is God calling you to give it up?
