Have you ever faced something that seemed frightening and intimidating looming like a giant in your path?
Hey sisters! In a popular Bible story, a young man faces a mighty giant that everyone else is too scared to even try to fight- and he confidently overcomes this giant!
You've probably guessed that this is the story of David and Goliath. I've heard this story many times, but I recently read it again, straight from the Bible, and it really encouraged me!
What thing that stood out the most to me was that when David faced Goliath, he wasn't confident in his own abilities, but rather in God's power! He was so confident in God that he said these words straight to Goliath:
"Today the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will kill you and cut off your head... the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! Everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you into our hands!" 1 Samuel 17:46-47
Those were brave words to say! But David didn't merely say them, he acted on them! He went forward and faced that giant, knowing that the battle was totally in God's hands.
Just like David, we all face "giants" in our lives that scare us, that make us want to hide. They can be just about anything: perhaps your giant is apologizing to someone that you've hurt, or maybe making a speech in front of your class, or sharing Jesus with someone. Maybe it's a family situation that you can't seem to come to terms with, or a friend who's let you down.
When we face these "giants", whatever they look like for each of us, we can trust in God to overcome them. Let us, like David, simply go forward, doing what God has asked us to do, trusting in His promises.
Speaking of God's promises, here are a few Bible texts that have helped me through moments of struggling with giants:
"Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will show to you today: for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall see them again no more. The Lord will fight for you, you only need to be still." Exodus 14:13-14
"But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, 'Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.." Isaiah 43:1-2
"Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry to you, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy." Psalm 61:1-3
I encourage you, as you face your "giants" seek God through prayer and reading His Word. Ask Him to give you special Bible verses to hold onto as you go forward in faith. Take heart, my sister! God will fight your giant. Trust Him.
