Doubting God...

Have you noticed that we tends to doubt the truthfulness of things we don't understand?

In my youth group at church, our class was divided over the story of Ananias and Sapphira. Some believed that God did the right thing by killing them. Others thought that He wasn't fair.

As I sat there listening to the debate, I realized that the group represented a miniature Great Controversy. Those who believed God was fair, and those who didn't.

"Why didn't God grant them mercy?" someone asked. "He's a God of love and could have overlooked their mistake. Isn't death too harsh of a punishment for their situation?"

"He gave each of them multiple chances, and they lied each time. They got what they deserved," someone else defended.

It amazed me that so many people in the Christian church still find ways to believe that God isn't fair. After all the Bible studies we had as a group, there was still doubt circulating among the youth.

Many Bible heroes we look up to doubted God at one time or another in their lives. Abraham and Sarah are a few of the examples that are shown in the Bible. When God promised that they would have a son, they doubted because they were old. After almost twenty years and still no child, Abraham resorted to marrying Sarah's handmaid, Hagar, and their son was Ishmael. Thankfully after many trials, Abraham grew in his faith and trusted in God even more.

The disciple Thomas is another great example. He was known as the "doubter" among the disciples. He refused to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he had tangible evidence. Even the testimonies of the other disciples didn't change his mind until he touched the scars on the hands of Jesus.

There's nothing wrong with asking questions, but doubt starts to creep in when we start to question God's fairness and faithfulness. God is always fair and faithful to us. However, it is Satan that wants us to think differently.

"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind." James 1:6

"Immediately Jesus reached out his hand... 'You of little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?' Matthew 14:31

I've often had questions about things I read in the Bible especially when they clashed with the belief I had always had on that topic. I usually take them to my parents since they both studied theology and we spend the evening discussing it more in depth but that's why I think also having a group of friends or a trusted figure to share your thoughts with is so important because they can guide you to the right answer
