What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "diplomacy"?
Hey GEM girls! I've often felt that in today's society, we tend to forget the importance of being diplomatic and more so, how it goes hand-in-hand with inner beauty and displaying our Christianity.
According to the dictionary, being diplomatic is being "careful to say or do things without offending people," or rather "dealing with people in a sensitive and effective way." Diplomacy shouldn't be confused or simply restricted to the context of political matters. Though it can be used in that sense, it can also be applied to our personal lives and relationships. Some synonyms for diplomacy are: discretion, finesse, delicacy, thoughtfulness, politeness and care.
These are all qualities and traits which can be said that Jesus possessed. He never willingly hurt someone or talked down to someone, despite being the Son of God. There was love and care in everything He did. His words were always warm and derived from love, His actions were thoughtful and derived from love, His thoughts were also derived from love. He embodied what today we could call diplomacy.
When challenged by the Pharisees, when called horrid names or persecuted by His own people, Jesus responded in the most delicate manner-in a confident but diplomatic way. He would teach but not blame the people He taught, He would advise but not belittle the people He advised, and when offended He didn't respond with offense or a better comeback but with diplomacy and discretion towards the others' feelings. He would always works for a positive outcome of the situation at hand.
Jesus serves as a constant reminder that diplomacy is the result of inner beauty and inner strength. A care towards others and the way we treat them is the key to being like Jesus. Yet, we shouldn't think that this means that our opinions should go quiet or be silenced. God doesn't want us to give up the voice He gifted us with. Instead, we can learn to express our opinions and our beliefs in a manner that not only demonstrates our Christianity, but also shows the same love and sense of thoughtfulness in our choice of words that Jesus demonstrated when He walked the Earth.
Being kind and considerate to others is the truest display of beauty and grace.
