A Remedy For A Fretful Heart

Updated: Mar 26, 2023

What can do you when something's tugging at your heart? How can you calm those frightening and worrisome thoughts that flutter in the back of your mind?

Hey GEM girls! If you have wondered those things, know that you are not alone. All of us have been through those tough moments at some point in our lives. We're all acquainted with sleepless night and having to endure a building tension from within. And though it may seem sometimes that our misery is going unnoticed or can't be understood by anyone, that is never truly the case.

Though it can be tough to think of Him when we are in a stressful situation, God understand everything we are going through and is going through them with us every step of the way. He never leaves our side or ignores our pain. He is the only one that we can truly say is with us all the time and understands us in a way we don't even understand ourselves. God is a life line that is waiting for us to reach out and grab on. He never takes that support away.

God longs for nothing more than to calm our fretful heart, to shoo away those fluttering worrisome thoughts and to see us rest in the peace He offers. But how can we remember this in the moments we need it most? When we're so consumed with whatever is rocking our boat, God doesn't typically come to mind.

Here are five things that I like to resort to when I find myself in desperate need of peace:

Take a seven-seven breath

Inhale for seven seconds and exhale for seven. By repeating this and focusing only on your breath, you will give your brain more oxygen and more room to think straight. You are also most likely to remember God during this pause from the busyness of life.

Pray

Though this is advertised everywhere in Christianity, sometimes we can forget the power of prayer and personally connecting to God. Not necessarily saying the habitual "Our Father who art in Heaven" but an intimate conversation between you and Him, your Best Friend who's listening to you most ardently.

Jot and Forget

A tougher step in the remedy- jotting down all the things that are worrying you and putting them aside. Though it may seem impossible to forget all about them and busy yourself at the beginning, with determination and concentration on your tasks at hand will eventually lead to success. We mustn't hold on to our worries. Give them to God and He'll take care of the rest.

Ask For Advice

If you have a trusted adult, parent or guardian, a pastor or teacher-someone preferably older than you and with more experience- confide in them and tell them your dilemma. Tell them about your worries, your concerns, the thoughts that are keeping you awake at night and distracted during the day. Ask for their advice and for their personal experiences in the matter. God can speak through the people around us to speak to you. Keep an open ear for any messages He's sending your way.

Treat Yourself

Last but not least, it's very important you focus on your well-being and recovery when faced with issues that consume your time and wellness. Do the things you love. Find meaning in everything you do: your hobbies, your schoolwork, your community service, your friendships and relationships with family, etc. Read your favorite book, light your favorite scented candles and focus on letting go of the past, of the issues that have troubled your mind for so long.

There will be times when we'll find doing these things hard to do. Letting go will sometimes be tougher than we wish. But the true remedy, the thing that should encourage us the most, is the thought of God being with us every moment. If there is one Bible verse that I love with all my heart, it's Matthew 11:28, which says: "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

How reassuring is the thought that God is waiting for us to grab on to Him, watching and enduring our pain as we go through the trials of life! How He wishes to simply sweep us up from the darkness of the night and place us in the peace of day. And He can, if we simply allow Him to.

I'm praying for all you girls, so that you can overcome whatever it is you're facing. ♥️😊
